  3. 19 This is the account of Abraham's son Isaac. Abraham became the father of Isaac, 20 and Isaac was forty years old when he married Rebekah daughter of Bethuel the Aramean from Paddan Aram and sister of Laban the Aramean. Genesis 25:19-26

  4. 21 Isaac prayed to the LORD on behalf of his wife, because she was barren. The LORD answered his prayer, and his wife Rebekah became pregnant. Genesis 25:19-26

  5. 22 The babies jostled each other within her, and she said, "Why is this happening to me?" So she went to inquire of the LORD. Genesis 25:19-26

  6. 23 The LORD said to her,        "Two nations are in your womb,        and two peoples from within you will be separated;        one people will be stronger than the other,        and the older will serve the younger." Genesis 25:19-26

  7. 24 When the time came for her to give birth, there were twin boys in her womb. Genesis 25:19-26

  8. 25 The first to come out was red, and his whole body was like a hairy garment; so they named him Esau. Genesis 25:19-26

  9. 26 After this, his brother came out, with his hand grasping Esau's heel; so he was named Jacob. Isaac was sixty years old when Rebekah gave birth to them. Genesis 25:19-26

  12. “In ancient Near Eastern culture… barrenness was a legitimate reason for divorce. A woman divorced for this reason would not likely be remarried; her lot in life was truly to be pitied. The recurring motif of barrenness in the family of God’s promise may serve as a generation-by-generation reminder that the children finally born to these women were born because of the intervention of the Lord… in this way, the children would no longer be regarded as simply the natural order of things, for each child in the line of promise was a distinct grace-gift from the Lord.” Genesis 25:19-26

  29. The main point of Jacob’s story is to trace God’s faithfulness and power in bringing to pass what He had promised. Genesis 25:19-26

  30. “How could a loving God allow this?” Instead of saying that circumstances “don’t make sense” we must admit and accept that we are “unable to make sense of it all”. Genesis 25:19-26

  32. Instead of interpreting God in light of our circumstances… we must interpret our circumstances in light of what we know to be true about God. Genesis 25:19-26
