  3. PROFILE of DRINKING WATER SYSTEMS IN SOUTH DAKOTA • 83% rely on ground water • 98.5% serve less than 10,000 people • Average number of customers per system is 864 • Median no. of customers is 137

  4. GROUND WATER • Ground water supplies are critical • DENR operates monitoring well networks to track both quality & quantity of ground water supplies • GW quality network - 145 wells at 80 sites in 25 aquifers

  5. South Dakota Observation Well Network Approximately 1,600 observation wells

  6. Challenges • Operation of Missouri River by the Corps of Engineers • Low population densities

  7. Summary • To address water needs in the future, South Dakota is relying on: • Statewide monitoring networks • Extensive rural water coverage • Missouri River • Black Hills Hydrology Study Results • Ongoing studies of ground water resources through geologic mapping, drilling, and well installation
