  2. Participants Fourteen students representing six US universities and twelve academic disciplines completed 180 hours of Zulu instruction in addition to attending two home stays in urban and rural areas of KwaZulu- Natal, cultural events and lectures from faculty in related disciplines. One of the lectures was given by an historical house owner in Eshowe.

  3. Program Organization • The Program was hosted by the Zulu department at UNP. Three faculty members of that department were the instructors, and two Zulu-speaking students from the department were selected as tutors to the students. • For the academic component of the Program students lived in single rooms in a dormitory on the attractive campus of UNP, located in the inland town of Pietermaritzburg, about one hour from the provincial capital, Durban. The Program achieved the same combination of classroom, tutorials and periods of immersion as the previous years.

  4. Imbali Urban Home Stays Kitchen Host sisters Lounge The urban home stay was in a Zulu suburb of Pietermaritzburg called Imbali.

  5. Rural Home Stays: KwaDududu • The rural home stay was organized in KwaDumisa, a small village without electricity or running water out in the mountaneous outskirts of KwaZulu-Natal, like this one. • For both home stays the students stayed with Zulu families and attended church services with their urban host families, and some attended a funeral service during the rural home stay. All enhanced their cultural awareness.

  6. Traditional Ceremony: UNomkhubulwana-1 Interactive Social Skills The project is designed to help participants to develop the social and communicative skills they will need to function confidently and effectively in a cross-cultural environment. Here they interacted with their peers in terms of age.

  7. Testing Passed! Dancing Girls are tested for purity, marked with a red dot on the forehead and issued a certificate if they have passed the test. This is cause for jubilation, hence the dance. Unomkhubulwana-2

  8. Drummers Men-Dancers A Speaker This traditional ceremony aims at helping the youth acquire moral values and minimize the incidence of HIV/Aids in the process. UNomkhubulwana-3

  9. Worshipers in uniform Virgins dancing in dignity. Shembe women dancing Traditional Religion: KwaShembe The Zulus are predominantly Christian,but there is also an indigenous kind of religion that balances faith and culture, kwaShembe, named after its founder, Isaiah Shembe.

  10. Reception at Urban Home Stay One of the students composed and sang two Zulu songs to entertain host families. Fun!

  11. Excursions Highway A Mall Nice cars. Vukani Museum Hard work had to go with fun, as learning moved outdoors!

  12. Winding up in the mountains! Giant’s Castle Caves Drakensberg Mts. EShowe Boardwalk World View Finally, debriefing, hiking, resting and enjoying nature on the Drakensberg Mts.

  13. A happy family was formed! Durban Beach on our way home At Shaka Zulu’s Museum On the go to homestay! Fresh fruit & veg daily! The eight-week program, from June 15 to August 15 2002 left the group developed in more ways than one, having learned more about each other.
