  2. Bellringer • Place HmWk in the “In-Box”. • Pick up a “Photo Finish” from the front table. • List & Illustrate the 8 phases of the moon in each box. • After five minutes we will discuss your knowledge of moon phases.

  7. What causes the phases of Earth’s moon? • Results from it changing position relative to Earth & the sun. • Phase: The amount of sunlight on the side of the moon that faces Earth.

  8. Why do we only see one side of the moon? • The moon’s period of rotation is the same as its period of revolution. • Orbit: The path that a body follows as it travels around another body in space.

  10. Moon Phases • Waxing: (Growing) The sunlit fraction that we see from Earth is getting larger. • Waning: (Shrinking) The sunlit fraction that we see from the Earth is getting smaller.

  12. Phases of the Moon Activity • Find the Moon Phase Diagram on page 662 in your textbook • Use the Phases of the Moon Activity Sheet to record your observations. • Submit both the Photo Finish organizer & Phases of the Moon Activity Sheet to the “In-Box at the end of class.

  13. Conclusion • In the “L” column list the ideas you learned today related to the following questions: • What causes the phases of Earth’s moon. • Why can we only see one side of the moon. • List & describe the 8 phases of the moon.
