STaR Chart Analysis– Berta Cabaza Middle SchoolSan Benito CISD By: Cynthia Zartuche Manrrique
What Is the STaR Chart Survey? • A survey that the State of Texas uses to measure how much or how little technology is used at each campus/district every year. • From this survey we can determine whether the campus/district is meeting the expectations for meeting the goals set by the state as far as technology use in the classroom/school/district.
How is Information Used? • Each campus can measure increases or decreases in how technology is being used at different focus areas to make the necessary changes to meet the requirements. • From this survey the campus/district can set goals to assure that technology is growing to reach the target level that is required.
The Key Areas Considered • TL –Teaching and Learning • EP -Educator Preparation and Development • L -Leadership, Administration, Instructional Support • INF -Infrastructure for Technology
Key Areas Identified/Scores This is our goal – To score a Four across the board!!!
2008-2009 =Development 2009-2010 =Advanced 2010-2011 =Varied Development to Advanced
Analysis • Berta Cabaza Middle School is clearly on its way to be on Target with technology. There has been some fluctuations throughout the past three years, but improvement has been noted throughout the four focus areas.
2008-2009 2009-2010 Development Technology Advanced Technology 2010-2011 Variance from Development through Advanced
Analysis • Berta Cabaza Middle School began in the development stages in 2008-2009 across all focus areas. • In 2009-2010 school yearwe see an increase towards the advanced technology across all four focus areas. • Unfortunately, 2010-2011 we see a variance of change between the Focus areas of TL and EP. • Causes could be due to budget cuts. • Computer ratio to students • Teachers fears of job loss
Breaking It Down! • The following slides will show the different focus areas and the changes occurring from year to year. • By taking the last three school years, administration and the technology department can see firsthand what needs are being met and where changes or more support Is needed in the weak areas of the survey.
Last minute change in curriculum may have caused TL5 to drop in this area. There seems to be a significant increase and then sudden drop in TL1-4. At the beginning of 2009-2010 school year teachers were pumped up, including myself, when we were shown a video on how students no longer learn with paper and pen, but through technology. Online learning remained the same.
The increase we see throughout the years may be to the fact that there have been more offers of in-services involving technology in the classroom. Teachers have been made aware of the importance of integrating technology so we saw a variety of projects being created by some students.
Since 2008-2009 school year there has been a significant growth that has stabilized through 2010-2011 school year. Unfortunately there has been a stand still in students per computer. Most computers at this campus are outdated and cannot support the new versions of applications and online tutorials.
In Conclusion Berta Cabaza Middle School is headed in the right direction according to the STaR Chart survey. It seems that the staff and administration have a better understanding of how technology is being used in the classroom. There has been an increase seen in the areas of Leadership and the Infrastructure areas. This is a positive increase because change cannot take place unless the administration gets involved. With administration taking a serious commitment, we should see a further increase in the areas of technology for this coming school year.
