  4. Artists • Edward Manet (1837- 1883) • Claude Monet (1840- 1926) • Pierre- August Renoir (1841- 1919) • Edgar Degas (1834- 1917)

  5. Impressionist Movement • Began in Paris • Artists recorded the leisure activities of Parisians ( concerts, cafes, picnics, beach parties etc.) • Backdrop was Paris as it had been under Napoleon III (1852- 1870)

  7. Post- impressionism • Continuation of Impressionism not a reaction against it • These artists wanted to join impressionism to earlier artistic traditions • More importance is placed on form and structure
