  1. Future Jobs 2009 Created April 2009 £1 billion investment from DWP Aim to create 150,000 new jobs across Britain Available to unemployed people aged 18-24 who have been receiving Job seeker’s allowance for 10 months but not 12 months. Fast tracking for NEET people Also job seekers in severely deprived communities- unemployment rate 1.5% higher than national average.

  2. Planning • A Future Job must be one that would not otherwise be available. You CANNOT replace an existing role with a Future Job. • The work must be meaningful, socially useful and give the FJF employee a genuine opportunity to build their skills and develop. • The aim of the programme is for FJF employees to move on into sustainable employment as soon as possible. • Remember that your FJF employee may have ‘issues’. You have to have the capacity to manage and work with these.

  3. Finances • There is £6500 funding available for each individual who stays in their Future Job for the FULL SIX MONTHS. • As a rough estimate 20% will probably need to taken by the Managing Agent/Accountable body to meet their costs. • Each FJF employee must be paid the National Minimum Wage (for 35 hours each week). For a person aged 22+ this is £5.80 per hour. All FJF Jobs must be available to the full age range, you can’t just pick younger people because they are about £1 per hour cheaper.

  4. Finances Continued • You will need to pay for all the equipment your FJF employee needs. This may or may not be recyclable. • You will need to provide the appropriate level of supervision to your FJF employee. • You will need to provide appropriate training to enable your FJF employee to do their job, develop and grow.

  5. Considerations • An FJF employee WILL cost you financially to some extent, they are NOT a free extra pair of hands. • They WILL be hard work. • They WILL be particularly beneficial in an income generating environment e.g. a social enterprise. • They WILL change the dynamics and diversity of your workforce. • The rewards of supporting a young person to move on in their life can be immeasurable and very satisfying.
