  1. PHED 1010 Physical Fitness for Life Online Course Orientation

  2. Is This Course Appropriate For You? • Are you self-motivated? • Do you consider yourself a self-educator? • Are you responsible? • Are you capable of managing your time well? • Are you willing to commit to a daily physical fitness regime that meets the ACSM requirements? If you could answer YES to all five of these questions, you have a chance to do well in this course.

  3. General Guidelines • Online courses are “different” & not meant to be interpreted as “more difficult” than the typical lecture setting. • There are no 2nd chances in an online course so you should not ask for one. All deadlines are posted on D2L and in your syllabus. It is your responsibility to keep up in the course. • Technical difficulties/hardships (no internet) are not an excuse for not completing your work on time. • There are no daily reminders in an online course. This is not an excuse for missing work or simply not progressing through the course.

  4. Course Webpage: Georgia View Desire 2 Learn • Website: www.gordonstate.edu • Go to MY GORDON • Click on GEORGIA VIEW DESIRE 2 LEARN • Enter your GORDONSTATE username and password. • Click on Physical Fitness for Life in your course listing.

  5. Desire 2 Learn • You are responsible for understanding how to use D2L prior to beginning this course. • It is NOT the instructor’s responsibility to teach you how to log-in and navigate through this course. • If you are having difficulty using D2L, you are encouraged to spend extra time learning the platform, attend one of the D2L workshops offered by Gordon State College or simply drop the course and retake it during another semester after you are proficient in using D2L.

  6. Email • Students are expected to use their GORDON STATE COLLEGE email to correspond with the instructor. • The D2L email client DOES NOT CLEARLY notify the instructor of a message; please do not use it. • The instructor WILL NOT respond to any off campus email addresses (yahoo, Gmail, Hotmail, etc.).

  7. Course Syllabus • Please read CAREFULLY and FULLY understand the course syllabus that is posted on D2L under COURSE INFORMATION. This will serve as an agreement between the student and the instructor on how you will be evaluated in this course.

  8. Course Textbook • Pearson Custom Library, Physical Fitness for Life, PHED 1010, Gordon College. ISBN: 978-1-269-11032-7. • You NEED this book in order to do well in this course. You cannot buy this textbook online. It is only available in the Gordon State College Bookstore. Older versions of this textbook may not provide sufficient information to do well in this course.

  9. Course Topics • 6 major topics relating to physical fitness and wellness will be discussed in this course. • 1) General principles • 2) Cardiorespiratory endurance • 3) Muscular strength/endurance • 4) Flexibility • 5) Body composition • 6) Nutrition

  10. Basic Study Approach • Buy the text book and read each chapter thoroughly. • Use the PowerPoints as an OUTLINE for your note taking while reading the chapters. Fill in the blanks when necessary. If you plan to just study the online PowerPoints and not read the chapters in preparation for your quizzes and exam, you will have difficulty doing well. • Review your notes and complete your weekly assignments. You must review the online PowerPoints before you are allowed to take the online quizzes & exams. • Complete other work/discussions as assigned.

  11. ACSM Physical Fitness Assessments • You must attend and participate in two on campus physical fitness assessments. Please dress out in appropriate workout attire and bring a writing utensil & Gordon student ID. • Session 1: 5/22/14 @ 3:00 PM – GYM FLOOR. • Session 2: 6/23/14 @ 3:00 PM – GYM FLOOR. • You will be evaluated in the following assessments: • Cardiovascular endurance (3 min step test) • Muscular strength and endurance (1 minute sit-ups & push-ups) • Body composition (body composition analyzer) • Flexibility (Sit and reach test) *Please refer to the policies in your syllabus if you happen to miss these assessment dates and times*

  12. Weekly Quizzes • The weekly quizzes will be the Review Questions that you will find at the end of each chapter. You will take theses under the QUIZ link on D2L. • You only have ONE attempt at these quizzes and you have 50 minutes to complete the quizzes. Make sure you are prepared! • You may find the “answers keys” in the book. However, I will caution you; several answers are marked incorrectly by the publisher in the printed keys. Read the chapters and answer accordingly to the chapter reading.

  13. Lab Report • You are responsible for preparing a lab report based upon the results from the initial on campus fitness assessments. • Specific instructions are attached to the assignment on D2L. Elapsed time will result in a ZERO grade. Make sure you are prepared! • The deadline for this exam is Sunday, June 29th at 11:59 pm.

  18.
