  1. Introduction to FamilySearch INDEXING Cherry Hill 5th Ward GOAL: 1,000,000 (one million) Records INDEXED from July 24, 2011 to July 24, 2012 Who Can Index? ANYONE can do it. Both LDS and Friends of other faiths. You just need an access to a computer (home, FHC, Library, etc).

STEPS TO DO INDEXING • Url address: https://www.familysearch.org • Create an LDS Account • Download indexing program • Select project and download batch (up to 10) • Read Project Information • Begin Indexing • When finished do quality check • After quality check, submit batch • Search Indexed records for your own family history

  6. Uses of an LDS Account • Access to ward directory and calendar in LDS.org website. • Access to new.familyseach.org website • To do indexing • Some portions of familysearch.org?? • Church leadership directory (for leaders only) • Other specialty web sites

  8. Membership Number • You can find your membership number: • On your temple recommend (11 digit number under the issued month) • On an Individual Ordinance Summary (IOS). The number is at the top of the page by the right hand margin. This form was given to members at tithing settlement. Forms can be obtained from the ward clerk.

  9. Click on “Indexing” to start process to download indexing program.

  10. Indexing Program • The link on familysearch.org is to download and install the indexing program. • Indexing is not done entirely through the internet, but through a program that must be installed on a computer before that computer can be used to do indexing. • As you will see, there are several steps before you actually get the program installed.

Download Steps • As the program is downloaded, you will be asked to do several clicks on buttons to: ”RUN”, “Yes”, “Next”, and “Finish” to download program. • You only need to do this if the Indexing program is not on your computer. • When you finish the installation, it will asked if you want to start the program. Your choice!

  14. ICON After completing download and installing of program; this Icon will be on your desktop. Just double click on it to start your indexing program any time that you want to do indexing.

  15. When starting the index program you will see this “Sign In” box: Enter your LDS account “User Name” and password. Click the box by “Work Offline” if you are not connected to the internet (ethernet or wireless). You will need to be connected to the internet to download batches or to submit batches. You do not need to be connected to do the indexing.

  16. “Tip of the Day”: Click “Next Tip” to read another tip. Click “Close” to get to indexing program. Uncheck “Show tips on startup” to not show a tip each time you begin a program.

  17. Click here to get batch(es) to download. Must have internet connection to do this. Area listing downloaded but unsubmitted batches. Message area for messages from church headquarters and stake director of indexing Area to set goals, view progress and history.

  18. Batch Selection List from Available Projects Select batch desired by clicking on it (highlight it) and clicking on “OK” button. For first batch of project, only download one batch to see if it is something that you would like to do. Up to 10 batches can be downloaded at one time by entered in the number desired in the lower left corner.

  19. Special Note • All batches are indexed two times. They are called the “A” and “B” extractions. • The computer compares the two records for differences. • A human arbitrator then selects the best of the two extractions or provides one that he/she feels is better than either of “A” or “B”.

  20. VERY IMPORTANT: Always read the PROJECT INFORMATION (INSTRUCTIONS) for a project that you are doing any project for the first time. You need to be aware of any peculiarities about the project. Click “Close” to read Project Information or to begin indexing.

  25. Some batches may need more records. Most do not, but this box comes up whenever a new image is to be displayed in case more entries need to be made from the current image.

  26. Some fields have standard list to check against. The lookup box can be seen by holding down the ‘Control’ key and pressing the letter “F” (Ctrl-F). This is useful when deciphering some handwriting.

  27. When a required field doesn’t contain any information to be entered, hold down the control key and press the letter “B” key.

  28. Quality check message appears after completing the last image. You will be asked to verify each field that is highlighted in red.

  29. You have several choices: 1) Ctrl-F to look up other possibilities, 2) Press “Accept” to accept entry as is, 3) Make change then press “Accept”. “Accept all” and “Change All” buttons are available when there is more than one entry for and all can be accepted or changed at one time.

  30. After quality check is finished, you will be asked if you want to submit the batch . Click on “Yes” if you are connected to the internet or click on “No” if you are not and submit the batch later when you have an internet connection.
