The island Karana lived on is thought to be the island of San Nicholas. This island is about a six-hour trip from Los Angeles California. The island is all by itself and has lots of wildlife, including otter, dolphins and sea elephants. There were also wild dogs there in Karana’s time. San Nicholas was a popular place for hunters of the sea otters, and the Aleuts, who hunted the otters, would travel to the island to hunt. The island is about eight miles long and has some very steep cliffs. There is a large coral reef surrounding it.
