  2. Peter was 6’7” • Born June 1672 and died February 1725 • Started his reign at just under 10 years old in May of 1682 • Ruled with his half brother Ivan the 5th • Aimed towards modernizing Russia About Peter

He had two wives • Peter had 14 children, but only three survived until adulthood • His oldest was Alexei • Alexei seemed suspicious in plotting to overthrow the Emperor • After being tried he finally confessed soon after being tortured • He was sentenced to execution only with the approval of his father • His father was trying to make his decision, but died in prison, most likely from the torture Who were his Children

  4. One of his projects early was to build St. Petersburg • He is credited with dragging Russia out of a medieval state • He centralized government • Modernized the army • Created a navy • His domestic policy allowed him to execute an aggressive foreign policy What did Peter do?

He created a navy as I said, but there were a lot of steps on the way • He studied shipbuilding in Zaandam and Amsterdam • Given opportunity to gain practical experience in the largest shipyard in the world • The navy was inspired because he wanted to capture the Ottoman fortress of Azov. How and why did he Change the Military

His older half sister Sophia wanted the throne to herself, so she helped Peter hoping she would schmooze him into giving it over • She would give Peter suggestions from this window behind where he was • When Peter left the kingdom Sofia built up a kingdom and Peter rose a young army and soon attacked Sophia’s kingdom • When Peter turned 17 he was old enough to run the kingdom by himself • He banished Sophia because of what she had done and made her become a nun. Did He Struggle?
