Background • Flynn Primary School closed in 2006 • $4 Million allocated in the 2010/2011 Budget to establish a child care centre • Alkira and Gumnut to amalgamate and run childcare centre • $4 Million allocated to refurbish remainder of the building in 2011/2012 Budget • No decision made on tenancy of remainder of building

  3. Works • Munns Sly Moore engaged to design childcare centre • Development Application for external works submitted • Internal works not requiring approval (eg removal of linings, demolition and some testing) have commenced

  4. Heritage • The historic and community values associated with the former Flynn Primary School have guided the work to date. • Tender documentation highlighted the need to protect the quality of the building • Munns Sly Moore engaged Peter Freeman a heritage consultant • Dr Taglietti, the original architect was consulted

  5. Heritage • Development Application has been considered by the ACT Heritage Council and there were no objections • Draft Conservation Strategy has been released for public comment • Items of cultural significance have been identified and protected

  6. Consultation • The Belconnen Community Council, Belconnen Community Services, Flynn community and John Flynn Community Group have been consulted • Alkira and Gumnut Childcare centres have been involved • Newsletter and website will be used to keep the community informed

  7. Next steps • Await decision on Development Application • Commence construction work if Development Application is approved • Finalise the Conservation Strategy subject to input (4 weeks) • Continue consultation with community on development of childcare centre and remainder of buildings
