  1. TURKISH EDUCATIONAL SYSTEM Education in Turkeyto a greatextend, issupervisedbythestate. It is designed to produce skillful professionalpeopleforallinstitutes of thenation in allcourses of life. Thesystem is dividedintothreedifferentstages. Eachstagelastsfouryearsandallstudentsareobligedtoattendallthesethreestages.

  2. Kindergarten education is not obligatory but it is thestatepolicytoenroll as manystudents as possible.

  3. PRE-PRIMARY EDUCATION(KINDERGARTENS) Pre-Primary education includes the optional education of children between 36-66 monthswho are under the age of compulsory primary education. Pre-Primary education classesareeitherstatesupportedorprivateschoolclasseswith suitable physical capacity.Therearealsoprivateday-centers, nursery schools, day care houses, child care houses and child care institutions.

  4. Thefirststagebegins at theage of 6 andfinisheswhenthekidsare 9. This is PrimaryEducation.

  5. Primary Education. Primary education schools provide 4 years of uninterrupted education. Itcovers the education of and teaching tochildren between 6-9 years of age. Itis compulsory for all citizens, boys or girls. It is free of charge in public schools.

Thenstudentsareobligedtoattendthesecondstage of theprimaryeducation. • Italsolastsfouryears.Afterthissecondfouryearstheyget a diploma. • There are four core subjects; Turkish, Maths, SocialStudiesand Foreign Language. • Foreignlanguageeducationbeginswhentheyarefourthgraders. • The most common foreignlanguageis English but some schools teach German, French. Some private schools teach two foreign languages at the same time.

  7. Thesecondstagebeginswhentheyare 10 yearsoldandcontinuestilltheage of 13.This is thefirstpart of SecondaryEducation.

  8. Thesecondpart of thesecondaryeducationbegins at theage of 14 andwhentheyare 17 theyfinish it.

  9. During secondary education studentsget general, vocational and technical education .It is alsofouryears. • Theaim is to give students common knowledge on thesubjects • Toprepare them for higher education, for a vocation.

  10. General secondary education includes : • High schools, high schools of science, teacher training • high schools, and fine arts high schools.

  11. Someinstitutions givevocationalandtechnicaleducationaimingtopreparestudents as manpower in business and other professional areas.

  12. At the end of high school, students take • the University Entrance Exam • and continue their studies at a university.

  13. Higher education institutions include: Universities Faculties Institutes Vocational higher education schools Conservatories Application and research centers

  14. After the national university entrance examination organized by the national examing body students, if they succeed, continue with their studies at a university.

  15. Graduate programs last a minimum fouryears. Some universities also ask for an additional year of English preparatory study to be completed before the start of studies.Ifwanttostudymedicine,theyhavetohave an education of at least 6 years.Engineeringprogrammesarefor 5 years.

  16. The quality of education at the Turkish universities varies greatly, some provide education whichareacceptedby internationally renowned schools. • Turkish universities actively participate in the Socrates - Erasmus program of the European Commission.
