Oshkosh Defense Overview • Started in: 1917 • Conceptualizes, Develops Prototypes, Markets, Manufactures, and Sells a wide array of off road rough terrain vehicles for military settings. • Award winning truck recycling / remanufacture program • Roughly a dozen facilities • ~ 2000 employees • Site Advisor – Sue Murawski • SHWEC Advisor – David Liebl

Background of Projects • Pollution Prevention Intern for UW- SHWEC • Environmental Engineer Intern for Defense • Merged the goals of UW SHWEC and Defense internships to focus on a core area that satisfies both organizations interests • Main goals were to research waste streams, collect data, and reduce waste where possible

  5. Background of Projects 3 Core Project “Zones” -Solid Waste Management -Recycling -Pollution Prevention Identified and worked on several projects this summer

  7. Solid Waste Management Trash gets charged pull fees and per ton fees Findings: Reduce the number of pulls = reduced costs and fuel savings (by the vendor) Potential yearly savings estimated at $20,000 (depends on yearly waste volumes and production) MTCO2e reduction 5 to 15 tons

Waste Management Wood Scraps • Busted pallets, crates, and other wood scraps are hauled away to a landfill to be ground up and used as daily cover. • A second vendor was identified who will take the wood scraps for use in pallet remanufacture. All unused pieces are turned into mulch and agricultural bedding. • Second vendor will also pay more for used pallets than the current vendor did. • Potential savings $150,000 to $200,000 per year for wood scrap management (these numbers are based on the first 6 months of 2011 which saw an increase in wood waste related to the type of truck production) • Potential revenue increase of $40,000 to $50,000 per year for the sale of used pallets (for the increased production duration of 2011) • MTCO2e reductions: neutral

Summer Achievements • Recycling • Used Container Recycling -Two vendors took empty 55 and 275 gallon containers – one vendor had a transporter involved who charged a fee • Got the service to be provided by 1 vendor eliminating any associated transporter fees and reduced the number of trucks (and miles) transporting Defense’s containers • Potential Savings: $10,000 to $20,000 per year • MTCO2e: 6 to 7 tons per year • IMPLEMENTED 7/2011
