  2. Questions • What just happened to me? • You jumped into your Father’s arms and He caught you! • What about fears and doubts? • You may be tempted to think, “That was just me.” • How can I stay full of the Holy Spirit and his power? • Don’t quit the quest now!

  3. Two Types of Tongues • Private devotional life • Public worship.

  4. Public tongues - 1 Corinthians 14 • 1. Public tongues require the attention of the congregation (see verse 5). • 2. Public tongues require an interpretation in a known language (see verse 27). • 3. Public tongues must edify or encourage the congregation (see verse 5).

  5. Do I have to speak in tongues publicly? • When you were baptized in the Spirit, you do not have to speak in tongues publicly. The direction to speak a public utterance in tongues is a distinct, purposeful compulsion that the Holy Spirit gives on specific occasions. • This is clearly different from your private, devotional language, which is between you and God.

  6. Characteristics for devotional tongues: • 1. Devotional tongues require Spirit baptism (see Acts 2:4). • 2. Devotional tongues do not require interpretation in a known language (see Acts 10:46). • 3. Devotional tongues will edify or encourage your personal life (see 1 Corinthians 14:4).

Be Aware • There is the tendency once a person is filled with the Holy Spirit to leave it there and forget the need to speak in devotional tongues on a daily basis. • Speaking in tongues is an essential part of your new life of walking in the Spirit and will help you stay full of the Holy Spirit.

Speaking in tongues daily is essential because it expresses worship. • “We hear them declaring the wonders of God in our tongues” (Acts 2:11). • At Cornelius’ house, : • “For they heard them speaking in tongues and praising God” (Acts 10:46). • Haven’t you been frustrated on occasion with your worship? Speaking in tongues daily is essential because it expresses effective intercession. • “In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit Himself intercedes for us with groans that words cannot express. And He who searches our hearts knows the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for the saints in accordance with God’s will (Romans 8:26-27). • 1 Corinthians 14:15 – “So what shall I do? I will pray with my spirit, but I will also pray with my mind…”

Two types of Intercession • The first type of intercession flows from our understanding. • The second type of intercession flows from God’s understanding. • “The Spirit searches all things, even the deep things of God. For who among man knows the thoughts of a man except the man’s spirit within him? In the same way no one knows the thoughts of God except the Spirit of God” (1 Corinthians 2:10b-11).
