  2. Introduction • Important subject • Wise (Proverbs 11:30) • In distress (2 Corinthians 2:11) • Do not always know the joy • True in my life • Why is this so?

  3. Jesus Found Joy • Purpose in coming • Save souls (Luke 19:10) • Emptied Himself (Philippians 2:7) • Died (Hebrews 12:1, 2)

  4. Jesus Found Joy • The Father’s will • Desire to please (John 5:30; 6:38; 8:29) • Joy in pleasing others • Worthwhile efforts not without cost (2 Samuel 2:18-25)

  5. Jesus Found Joy • Our joy in winning souls • Love (Luke 10:25-37) • Serve (1 John 3:16-18) • Cannot do personal work impersonally • “People don’t care how much we know until they know much we care”

  6. Paul Found Joy • Feelings toward the Philippians • Joy and crown (Philippians 4:1) • Established the church there (Acts 16:12-34) • Took the Gospel into new territory (Romans 15:20)

  7. Paul Found Joy • Longed to see them • Objects of his love and affection • His work broadened as their faith grew (2 Corinthians 10:13-16)

  8. Paul Found Joy • Proof of his labor • Not done in vain (Philippians 2:16) • Their steadfastness reinforced his resolve • Let’s not “grow weary” (Galatians 6:9)

  9. Paul Found Joy • Wanted them to be rewarded • Wasn’t after what they had (Philippians 4:14-17) • Recall the Jim Bakker incident • Be like Paul (1 Thessalonians 2:1-12) • Seeing the faithful in heaven (1 Thessalonians 2:18-20)

  10. John Found Joy • Hearing about them (3 John) • Good news (v. 3) • They taught and lived the Gospel • Proved their faith (vv. 5, 6; James 2:15-17; 1 John 3:16-18) • Sad to hear of Diotrephes (vv. 9, 10)

  11. John Found Joy • Become “fathers” and “mothers” • May have given up family (Mark 10:29, 30) • Fill the emptiness in their heart

  12. John Found Joy • Paul-Timothy relationship • Many teachers, but one father (v. 15) • Tremendous influence • Watch them grow

  13. John Found Joy • Rob ourselves of joy • Not the “neighbor” we should be (Luke 10:25-37) • Substitute knowledge for compassion • Souls will be lost

  14. Conclusion • Know the joy? (John 4:35) • Lay down your life? • Angels are ready to rejoice • Shall we disappoint them?
