The Online Instructor Flexibility Paradigm of education Equity of education can and does exist outside the “Brick-and-mortar” school setting Accessibility to Students Instruction, Direction, and Clarification for students and parents can and does occur outside of the traditional school hours (and weekends) Hours of Operation Virtual Office Hours School Cell Phones for Instructor ‘Constant’ online presence

Handyman(or woman) and a Jack-of-all-Trades Highly Qualified Content Area Teachers Different Hats Academic Counselor -Transcript analysis -Course assignment – recovery credit and original credit -Student Issues Truancy Specialist Daily contact with student and parents/guardians about progress Response to Intervention Individualized student instruction and remediation to supplement E2020 curriculum

  5. What Else Helps? Suitable Technology Skills Ability to ‘Think Outside the Box’ In an untraditional setting sometimes untraditional thinking and solutions need to be applied

Traditional, Brick and MortarClassrooms • Curriculum and Pacing Guides Drive Instruction • 25 to 40 students all on the “same page” • Students taking 6-8 different classes concurrently • Needs of many can outweigh the needs of one • Outside of classroom time focused on planning lessons and grading

Online Learning ( Our Flavor of Kool-Aid ) Student need drives Instruction Every student is on a ‘Different Page’ Students focus on 1-3 classes at a time Outside “classroom time” may focus around troubleshooting, uploading additional instructional videos, email help, phone calls (same as during classroom hours)

The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly Typical profile of an unsuccessful student: Lack sense of ownership with their learning Students significantly below grade level standards (In reading specifically) Student quote, “online learning is a lot tougher than I thought it would be.” Adjustment / transition period from Brick-and-mortar to the virtual environment

Successful Student Story Rosa Gonzalez Brick-and-Mortar completion rate average of less than 3 classes a quarter in six years of traditional seat time credits for a total of 16.5 credits Blended Environment completion rate of 10 classes a quarter through her first 2 quarters of enrollment with APS Online and is expected to graduate May, 2011.
