  1. The 1990’s Tess Monks Miranda Kline Guy Jackson Tessa Breon

  2. Nelson Mandela and South Africa • Nelson Mandela was affected in a positive way in the 1990's after being put in jail for sabotage and treason. He was affected positively because of a man by the name of Frederik Willem de Klerk otherwise known as F.W. de Klerk. F.W. de Klerk was President in 1990 and freed Nelson Mandela.

  3. Mandela and Presidency • In the 1992 election Nelson ran for President and won the election by a landslide. Nelson Mandela was the first black man to be voted democratically into office.

  4. In the Beginning of the Desert Storm • Once Saddam Hussein took control of Iraq, he then in 1990 wanted to make his country bigger so they invaded Kuwait. Once they proceeded with the attack it seemed as though they would attack Saudi Arabia next. Once the United States was informed of this plan of attack the United States entered the war for the protection of Saudi Arabia.

  5. The war….. • In the war it included over 2000 missions and had a 100 hour land battle in which this knocked Iraq’s Airfield and Aircraft missiles out. Soldiers said that thousands of explosions were land mines, the land mines were more dangerous than enemy fire. Days and nights were filled with “Smart Bombs” which the US dropped on Iraq and Kuwait. Smart Bombs were highly sophisticated laser guided weapons.

  6. A deadline to evacuate…. • The US set a deadline for January 5, 1991. • On this date Iraq was to be out of Kuwait but Saddam Hussein ignored the deadline. So the US decided as payback to drop a specially designed 5,000 pound bomb on a bunker to kill Saddam Hussein.

  7. The End of the war… • On March 3rd 1991 Iraqi leaders accepted to cease fire and Iraq moved out of Kuwait.

  8. Reunification of Germany • In the year of 1990 both East and West Germany wanted to reconnect with each other. East Germany was where they had what they called "Conservation Parties" in which they wanted to support the reconnection of both sides. They also held an election that they won showing that they had wished to be reunited. The East wanted to reconnect but the new government for the West wanted to do otherwise, in which they wanted to stay separated.

  9. Reconnecting…… • In July the Economic Union* occurred with the West, then in October of the 1990's something called the Political Reconnection took place. This was run by Kohl who wished to retain power with both sides. The East, economically, was not doing well either, their economy failed so both sides were not doing well and they both could have used some help from their country. The East thought it would be smart to push Germany into what they call a "recession*". This soon led them to social tension but in the year of 1994 everything seemed to change for their economy and it improved more than it had before.

  10. Boris Yeltsin • Boris Yeltsin was the former President of the USSR. He idealistically, was communistic. Ironically though, he was born to an Anti-Communistic family. Boris Yeltsin had become communist once he got out of high school.

  11. The Fall of the Soviet Union • In 1991 The USSR was divided into 15 countries. Once this occurred the West found this as a victory. The US also viewed this as a relief that they would no longer have to worry about the USSR any longer though the US originally thought that it would be a success just as Russia had been. After all the USSR was built in the Russian Empire.

  12. Leading the USSR… • The two leaders elected to head the USSR had a heath condition that caused them to die in their time of office. Then they gained their last leader and unfortunately it was not the best time economically to gain a new leader in power. Economically this was not good for the Soviet Union.

  13. And then it fell…. The Flag of what is now russia: • The Soviet Flag went up for the last time on Christmas in 1991. The Russians took over and decided to keep the flag as it is The Symbol, A hammer and sickle Represents the hard work of citizens.

  14. William Jefferson Clinton • More commonly known as Bill Clinton, William Jefferson Clinton was president during this very busy time in the 1990’s. • Starting off at some of the top colleges and then continuing on to governing Arkansas, Bill had a good background as he was elected president in 1993.

  15. Life During Presidency • Bill Clinton remained in office for two terms. • At the end of his two terms he was impeached and replaced by George W Bush. • By the end of his presidency Bill was not a popular political role model. • After being accused of having an affair with one of his interns Monica Lewinsky, Bill was not seen as a positive political figure.

  16. His Presidency….. • Once he joined the party he worked hard and worked his way up to be said as a successor of Vladimir Putin whom was the President of the USSR. Boris Yeltsin was then elected President and was re-elected after one term.
