JOINT RELEASE: PBS REPORT HIGHLIGHTS A DECADE OF SUCCESS Performance-Based Standards (PBS) vehicles are designed to perform their tasks as productively, safely and sustainably as possible, and to operate on networks that are appropriate for their level of performance. PERFORMANCE-BASED STANDARDS PBS vehicles are designed to perform their tasks as productively, safely and sustainably as possible, and to operate on networks that are appropriate for their level of performance. The basic principle of PBS is matching the right vehicles to the right tasks. PBS vehicles are tested against 16 stringent safety standards and four infrastructure standards to ensure they fit the existing road network and are safe. The scheme has been in operation since October 2007. Road safety difficulties Road safety measures can be difficult to enforce, because truck drivers and fleet owners often feel like they’re being put on the defensive. As for vehicle manufacturers and truck parts suppliers, it can seem like excess expenditure. Solving the problem One effective solution is to get the industry itself involved. The PBS puts trucks and buses through stringent criteria that includes four infrastructure requirements and sixteen safety protocols. Initially, PBS regulations were applied to vehicles that were currently on the roads, but soon manufacturers got on board.
