First conditional

First conditional. If I buy a car, I won’t go to work by bus anymore. In the first conditional, the condition is a reasonable event in the present or future. Second conditional. If I had a helicopter, I wouldn’t go to work by bus anymore.

  1. First conditional If I buy a car, I won’t go to work by bus anymore. • In the first conditional, the condition is a reasonable event in the present or future.

  2. Second conditional If I had a helicopter, I wouldn’t go to work by bus anymore. • In the second conditional, the condition is an impossible or unrealistic event in the present or future.

  3. Third conditional • This is the only conditional that talks about the past. • It is an unrealistic conditional because the condition is always an impossible event in the past (something that didn’t happen) • Use it to say what would have happened if the past had been different.

  4. Third Conditional • If I had studied for that test, I would have passed. • If she had seen the film, she would have liked it. • If we had invited him to the party, he would have come. • If you hadn’t eaten so much, you wouldn’t have felt sick.

  5. Third Conditional • If …past perfect… >>> ...[would have done]…

  6. Conditionals I went to bed late yesterday. I didn’t wake up on time this morning If I hadn’t gone to bed late yesterday, I wouldn’t have woken up late this morning. I read the end of the book before anything else. I spoiled the surprise. If I hadn’t read the end of the book, I wouldn’t have spoiled the surprise.

  7. Conditionals He drank too much beer. He made rude comments about everybody. If he hadn’t drunk too much beer, he wouldn’t have made rude comments about everybody. I bought a new computer and, one week later, the prices fell down. I got mad. If I hadn’t bought a new computer, I wouldn’t have got(ten) mad.

  8. Conditionals George Bush was elected president of the U.S. Then, he started the war in Iraq. If George Bush hadn’t been elected, he wouldn’t have started the war in Iraq. I learned English, and I started working as a teacher. If I hadn’t learned English, I wouldn’t have started working as a teacher.

  9. Conditionals Rodolfo’s team, Vitoria F.C., lost the championship. Rodolfo got sad. If Vitoria hadn’t lost the championship, Rodolfo wouldn’t have got(ten) sad. Freddie Mercury died in 1992. Queen disbanded because of that. If Freddie Mercury hadn’t died, Queen wouldn‘t have disbanded. Germany lost World War One. Because of that, they started World War Two. If Germany hadn’t lost WWI, they wouldn’t have started WWII.
