  1. Challenge: How did we evolve over time and how has that affected modern society? (Standard: LE 3.1a) Homework: Print and Review Study Guide Do Now: What comes to mind when you see this picture? What differences do you see between each figure?

  2. Also known as the common chimpanzee or chimp for short • The pelvis of the chimpanzee was formed in a way which made it easier to walk on all 4 limbs rather than us humans which walk on our two legs • The femur is designed to help function with the pelvis. The chimp’s femur is larger and adjusts better to its pelvis. • The foot of a chimpanzee was designed to grip to trees since that was part of its habitat. As we evolved, we began to lose this trait since it was not necessary anymore. • The rib cage is more expanded and is larger. Over time, evolution took its course and made the rib cage smaller to what it is now. • The skull is very protruding and has a strong brow ridge • Ninety-eight and a half percent similar Pan Troglodytes(2.2 Million Years Ago)

  3. Known for being in the Geico commercial “It’s so easy a caveman can do it!” • Resembles more of a chimpanzee rather than a man. • Has less distinct characteristics, and is becoming more human like • Pelvis and femur have both evolved allowing humans to walk on two feet • Rib cage is still broad but has reduced slightly in size • The skull has become more human like but it still resembles a chimp and the brow ridge is still very distinct. Homo Neanderthalensis(O.5 Million Years Ago)

  4. Has the closest characteristics to present day humans • The skull resembles the facial feature of modern humans • The pelvis has allowed them to walk properly like we do now • Foot resembles ours today • Rib cage has minimized over time and is slightly larger than the one we have today. Homo Sapiens(25,000 Years Ago)

  5. TRIVIA!Prize+2 on Post Test

  6. Question 1 • Q1: Which group is most related to us humans? • Pan Troglodytes • Homo Neanderthalensis • Homo Sapien

  7. Question 2 • Q2: Which fact about the Homo Sapien is false? • They have the closest characteristics from us • Has a slightly decreased protruding face • The placement of the pelvis has allowed them to walk properly

  8. Question 3 • Q3: Which type of human ancestor was used in the Geico commercials? • Pan Troglodytes • Homo Sapien • Homo Neanderthalensis

  9. Question 4 • Q4: Which human ancestor has the most distinct ribcage? • Pan Troglodytes • Homo Neanderthalensis • Present day humans

  10. Question 5 • Q5: Which human ancestor came first? • Pan Troglodytes • Homo Sapien • Homo Neanderthalensis

  11. Question 6 • Q6: Which characteristic allows the Homo Neanderthalensis to walk on two feet? • Ribcage • Femur • Pelvis

  12. Question 7 • Q7: Which percentage correctly describes how closely related chimpanzees are to humans? • 98.5% • 99.4% • 96.7%

  13. Question 8 • Q8: What does the suffix –OLOGY mean? • Humankind • Study • Evolution

  14. Question 9 • Q9: A Hominid is … • Our lineage • A type of evolved human • None of the above
