Revision – What will I need? The right environment – a quiet, uncluttered space. Working in chaos and mess is not good. Resources– notes, books, past papers, useful websites. Good organisation – keep things for each subject together in one place so that you’re not scrabbling around trying to find those brilliant notes you made two weeks ago or the mark scheme for the exam questions you’ve just had a go at. You don’t need fancy things - cardboard boxes are fine!
Healthy body + healthy mind = successful revision Good amounts of sleep Healthy balanced diet – regular meals and plenty of water If you suffer from any medical conditions get advice from your doctor in the run up to the exams. Positive attitude – believe in yourself and keep calm. You are capable of achieving/going higher than your forecast grade. The fact that you have planned your revision should stop you feeling stressed.
Cut backs in the final run up to exams! It is difficult to juggle everything. You should seriously consider cutting back on after school and weekend activities such as: The gym Clubs/Groups Jobs Volunteer work Socialising Housework/chores Baby-sitting This does not mean you give everything up. Just be sensible and prioritise for a few weeks.
Cut backs in the final run up to exams! You should reduce the amount of time you spend on social media such as Facebook, Instagram, BBM, etc. Research shows that the average UK teenager spends 31 hours a week on-line! 120 hours a month! Come to an agreement with your friends that you will all turn off social media for a set period every day. N.B. 1 hour of focussed revision is better than 4 hours of revision involving distractions and interruptions.
Your revision timetable should be realisticYou must includeBreaks – It is unhealthy and ineffective to revise continuously without breaks. Have regular short breaks (e.g. 20 mins) after every 2 or 3 hours of revision. Allow yourself a whole morning or afternoon off every week during exams if possible.
You must include • 1ststage revision - when you make sure you understand and have learnt everything you need to know. • 2ndstage revision – using past paper questions. • 3rdstage revision - final re-cap revision to quickly refresh things in your mind.N.B. Always allow yourself time to ask your teachers if there is something you are really stuck on. Your revision timetable should be effective
Revision Timetable – Step-by-step Keep your Examination TimetableSOMEWHERE SAFE & ACCESIBLE. e.g. Stuck on the fridge! Write your exams down on the blank revision timetable/ It is critically important that you do this accurately! Concentrate. You do not want to make a mistake. Is it a morning exam or an afternoon exam? Write it in the correct box. Ideally use a coloured pen to write these in so that they stand out. Write down the time the exam starts and the venue. You will also be given dates and times for special subject revision sessions in school. You should write these on the timetable too. Use a different colour.
What next? Include on your revision timetable anything important that you need to do in addition to revision e.g. Important social event, birthday, family occasion etc. We all have lives and we all need to do nice things to keep us going. No-one expects you to revise continuously for 3 months. But be sensible. Clearly , going out with friends every day is not sensible!
Now ask yourself how much revision you need to do? By the time Aprilarrives you should be able to work out how many hours of revision you will need to do for each of your subjects. Don’t take a rough guess. Work it out in a logical way. You will feel more organised, in control and calm. Revision Calculator - Have one for each subject. (You have an example and a blank one in your pack)
Adding revision to the timetable Start from the morning or day before your exam (work backwards) and write in the subject you should be revising. So, if you have a French exam on Monday afternoon. Monday morning should be spent doing final French revision. A good deal of Saturday or Sunday should also be spent on French. If you have two exams on the same day, make sure that both subjects get a fair amount of revision time in the days before the exam.
Remember! Use your revision calculator to cross check. Make sure that you can fit in the number of hours you worked out you needed to revise for each subject. Include time to ask your teachers if there is something you are unsure of.
