  3. Evangelical Manifesto • Oz Ginness wrote a book several years ago called “A Call to Civility” • He felt nobody listened…. So he organized an Evangelical Manifesto… got famous Evangelicals to work on it for three years… and in May 2008 released it with big fanfare from Washington DC. • It was “light” on what Evangelicals believe … and “Heavy” on being civil in society.

  4. Civility • The Manifesto encourages Evangelical preachers to not be “confrontive” ... But gracious and civil as they address national concerns… (like abortion, gay marriages, euthanasia, et al)/ • He purpose seems to desire “Evangelicals” to separate from “Fundamentalists” (who take the scripture literally). Note: Many “extreme” liberal theologians signed on to the Manifesto. • The Manifesto was received by most as a big thud/dud.

PROBABLY THINKING OF MAJOR CHRISTIAN COMMUNITIES AT ALEXANDERIA, ANTIOCH, AND ROME

BACK UNDER THE CEREMONIAL LAWS) • GET THE “GENTILES” IN THE CHURCH TO GO BACK AND LIVE LIKE “GENTILES” • I.E. 2 PETER 2:13 “…THEY COUNT IT PLEASURE TO REVEL IN THE DAYTIME. THEY ARE BLOTS AND BLEMISHES, REVELING IN THEIR DECEPTIONS, WHILE THEY FEAST WITH YOU. They have eyes full of adultery, insatiable for sin. They entice unsteady souls. They have hearts trained in greed…….” et al

  16. SATAN’S PURPOSE • CONFUSE/DESTROY THE DOCTRINE OF THE GOSPEL… • AS “HE SOWS FALSE DOCTRINE” … HE MASKERADES AS AN ANGEL OF LIGHT… (read 2 Cor. 11:13-15) .. Acts 20: 29-30 • I.E. In Paul’s Eyes • Peter was attacking the gospel of GRACE by his behavior • Actually it was a case of what Peter was NOT doing • Remember, after Peters experience at Simon’s house in Joppa, Peter had begun eating (fellowshipping) with Gentile Christians (Peter understood the PLAN OF GOD FOR THE CHURCH)

God’s WORD tells us to strongly avoid

Paul Calls Peter to Rememberwhat James taught • “Faith without works is dead”…. i.e. genuine faith will ALWAYS result in life changing behavior. • (you say that you believe the gospel… so do the demons … they know it better than you, the difference is …. They have made no commitment to the truth (TO TRUSTING WHAT GOD SAID) … so they are eternally lost.) • (or saying it another way, your actions with let people know what you really believe… no behavioral change, YOUR faith IS NOT GENUINE)

  21. Paul Spoke Directly to Peter in Front of All • Why? It was not just Peter that was not putting their faith to proper behavior … it was the whole JEWISH PORTION OF THE Antioch Church…. • DID THE ANTIOCH CHURCH CHANGE? • DID THE ANTIOCH CHURCH UNDERSTAND THAT “IN CHRIST”, THERE IS NO DIFFERENCE BETWEEN JEW AND GENTILE… ALL ARE ONE?

Change in ANTIOCH BEHAVIOR • FIRST PLACE MENTIONED IN ACTS (11:19-20) WHERE JEWISH CHRISTIANS PREACHED THE GOSPEL TO GENTILES • NOT ONLY WAS THE CHURCH AT ANTIOCH, THE FIRST RECORD IN SCRIPTURE TO BRING JEWISH AND GENTILE CHRISTIANS TOGETHER IN WORSHIP AND FELLOWSHIP, BUT AS FAR AS IS KNOWN, IT WAS THE FIRST CHURCH TO SEND MISSIONARIES TO PREACH SPECIFICALLY TO GENTILES (ACTS 13:1-3) • FIRST CALLED “CHRISTIANS” AT ANTIOCH .. THEIR BEHAVIOR SHOWED

  23. RESULT • CONTENDING FOR “THE FAITH” PROBABLY CAUSED GREAT “OFFENSE” … BUT THE END RESULT WAS AWESOME…. (ESPECIALLY SINCE MOST OF US HERE IN THIS ROOM ARE GENTILES). • THIS GOSPEL WAS BELIEVED BY MANY… AND PASSED DOWN GENERATION-TO-GENERATION TO YOU AND ME.

  25. PRAISE GOD FOR PAUL • CONTENDED FOR THE TRUTH… BY HIS LIFE (BEHAVIOR) AND WORDS … THO COST SOMETIMES VERY HIGH • IT COST JESUS CHRIST HIS LIFE • IT COST TEN OF THE APOSTLES THEIR LIVES FRANCIS OF ASSISI: “PREACH THE GOSPEL ALL OF THE TIME, IF NECESSARY, USE WORDS”

So what? • WHEN IS IT RIGHT TO CONFRONT? • PEOPLE WHO ACTIVELY TEACH SERIOUS ERROR – ESPECIALLY DOCTRINES THAT CORRUPT VITAL GOSPEL TRUTH (2 JOHN 7-11) • DISCERNMENT IS EVERY CHRISTIANS DUTY: “TEST ALL THINGS, HOLD FAST WHAT IS GOOD. ABSTAIN FROM EVERY FORM OF EVIL”.. (I THESS 5:21-22) • JUDGE WITH RIGHTEOUS JUDGEMENT (John7: 24)

  27. `JESUS FINAL WORD TO THE CHURCHES…. REVELATION 1-3 • The silencing of false teachers was still one of our Lord’s primary concerns… even from HIS throne in heaven. HE addressed seven churches. ONLY two of the churches (Smyrna and Philadelphia), were commended for their faithfulness without any qualification or hint of rebuke. All five other churches received various measures of rebuke, based on how corrupt, unfaithful or spiritually lethargic they were. • A prominent theme in practically all Jesus messages to those seven churches is the issue of how they responded to false teachers and rank heretics in their midst.

Whether we like it or not • Our very existence in this world involves spiritual warfare – it is not a party or picnic • If Christ Himself devoted so much of His time and energy during His earthly ministry to the task of confronting and refuting false teachers, surely that must be high on our agenda as well. • His style of ministry ought to be the model for ours, and His zeal against false religion ought to fill our hearts and minds as well.
