  3. Plot Development • Stage 1: The set-up in Indiana Jones introduces Jones as a teacher and he finds out about the ark. He then meets Marian in the bar soon following the Nazis. • Stage 2: Jones finds out what he needs to do and finds out about the Nazis and has to take Marian with him creating the films double orientation goal. • Stage 3: Jones completely figures out the goal and knows what is happening and has to avoid situations with the Nazis. Marian is becoming more clear about her role • Stage 4: This is the climax where Jones finds the ark and defeats the Nazis and does not die claiming the ark.

  4. Transitions • Set up to complicating action: • Transition from where all characters are met and who they are • Establish the double orientation goal • The scene: • Indiana comes to get the medallion and so do the Nazis. Jones and the Nazis fight and Marians bar gets set on fire.

  5. Transitions • Complicating action to development • Action goes into a new direction • New situation that the procrastination must cope with • The scene: • The Nazis kept interfering and getting in the way to make obstacles for Jones. • Jones managed to get into many fights, but, of course, wins them all

  6. Transitions • Development to climax and resolution • Goals are all in place • Many incidents create action, suspense and delay • The Scene: • Indiana and Marian get caught and tied up to a pole. The ark reacts and all the Nazis died, but they managed to stay alive. The Ark burned the rope that tied them up and they got away.

  7. Dangling Cause • A dangling cause is when the writer plants an idea into your head that will come to play later in the film • “I hate snakes” Indiana Jones said at the beginning of the movie • Later in the movie, Jones has to overcome his fear of snakes and just deal with the thousands of snakes that he is surrounded by in the cave

  8. Causes • Things that were shown early in the film come true later on. • Cause 1: • Cause In the begging of the movie we see that Jones has the gold idol. Then his old friend takes the idol from him. • We then see that happen later on in the film again.

  9. Causes • Cause 2: • Before Marion’s bar burns down we see that she likes to drink. She can hold her liquor down. • At the time it was an entreating to see this but they showed us this for a reason. • Later on in the film Marion was taken by some men and her plan to escape is to have a drink with the man in the tent.

  10. Causes • Cause 3: • When the men were in Marion's bar. A man picks up the idol but he did not know it was very hot, so he burned his hand. • Later on we see that the Nazi’s used the part of the mans hand to figure out the next step to find the Ark. But there was two sides of the idol and they only got one side of it.

  11. Motif • Motif • Motifs is where images, actions, colors, and music are shown over and over again in the movie. • We see three different motifs: • 3 Theme songs and the color red • Color red: • The red suit on the monkeys back • Marians pants • The belt on the ninjas black suit

  12. Motif • Motif 1: • Musical Motif of Indy’s theme song plays when • The professor pulled up to Indiana’s house • They are in the plane traveling to one of there destinations • Indiana breaks the wall in the Ark to save himself/Maian • Indiana is riding on the horse to get the truck

  13. Motif • Motif 2 • Musical motif of Marion’s theme song is played when • Indiana is thinking about her when he is talking about the Ark • There is a close up of her and the monkey is on her face • She is trying to clean Indy’s cuts • She buys Indy a drink after his meeting

  14. Motif • Motif 3 • Musical motif of the Ark’s theme is played when • The ark was first brought up in the book • They are in Indiana’s house talking about the ark • Indiana climbs down the rope into the cave in the Nazi camp • When Indi finds the carvings in the wall • Indiana finds the tomb he is looking for after the microscope shot
