  2. Raiders • Directed by Steven Spielberg • George Lucas and Phillip Kaufmann story creator • Harrison Ford portrays Indiana Jones • Karen Allen portrays Marion Ravenwood • Denholm Elliot portrays Dr. Marcus Brody • John Rhys-Davies portrays Sallah • John Williams does the music again.

Whip Crackin’ Indiana • Tom Selleck originally cast as Indy. • Was committed to “Magnum P.I.” though, which didn’t go into production until after Jones wrapped. • Nick Nolte also turned down Indiana role. • Danny Devito wanted for part of Sallah • Was committed to “Taxi” though. • Canyon used to transport the ark to the altar was the same canyon used in Star Wars. • For “Well of Souls” scene wranglers scoured every animal shop for every snake they could find. • Weren’t enough after that so they used cut up garden hose.

  4. Watch out for that boulder Indy! • In the scene where Indy is dragged behind a truck Ford badly bruised his ribs. • That scene was an homage to John Ford’s classic movie “Stagecoach”. • For the cobra snapping at Indy in the “Well of Souls” a sheet of glass separated Ford from the snake. • For the new DVD release some 970,000 frames of film were cleaned by Lowry Digital Images.

  5. Ooh . . . That had to hurt! • Production costs rose to $20 million from a very small budget. • This was 1981’s biggest grossing movie. • George Lucas came up with Indy same time he came up with Star Wars. • Lucas always goes on holiday before a film opens, it was during the holiday for Star Wars that Spielberg joined him and they came up with Indiana Jones. • Idea was originally turned down by every studio even though Spielberg and Lucas were both involved.

  6. Don’t look at the ark! • This was the first time Spielberg directed in Britain. • Indy’s jacket was artificially aged and they had to have ten on set at all times. • This was Alfred Molina’s film debut. • Indy’s whip is 10 feet long, although it would shrink for certain shots. • In the scene where Indy faces an Arab man with a sword in the Cairo streets he was sick with dysentery so the long scene that was planned was cut shorter.
