  2. The Land • Gateway between Africa and Europe • Surrounded by Morocco, Libya, and Mauritania • Bordering the Mediterranean Sea • petroleum, natural gas, iron ore, phosphates, uranium, lead, zinc • Mostly plateau and desert • Some Mountains

  3. Climate/Vegetation • Rainfall in the winter • Plateaus, southern slopes and ranges don’t get much rain • Winters are not cold • Dessert temperatures are extremely hot even in the winter

  4. Government • Republic • Socialist government • President Abdelaziz BOUTEFLIKA • Every 5 years president is elected by popular vote • Constitution then abolished term limits • Last election was 2009 next will be 2014 • Judicial Branch = Supreme Court

  5. History and Current Events • Independence on July 3, 1962 • 130 years of French rule • Islamic Salvation Front won the first election in 1991

  6. Economy • Exports: petroleum, natural gas, and petroleum • Export partners: US 23.9%, Italy 15.5%, Spain 11.4%, France 8%, Netherlands 7.8%, Canada 6.8% (2008) • 69.9% of total population can read

  7. Culture • Sunni Muslim 99%, Christian and Jewish 1%\ • Arabic is the language of 81% of Algeria's population • National dish = couscous, steamed semolina wheat served with lamb or chicken, cooked vegetables, and gravy
