  2. Algeria’s coordinates are 28°North and 3° East. It is the second largest country in Africa and it’s capitol is Algiers. Algeria’s Location

  3. Algeria is located in Northern Africa. It borders the Mediterranean Sea and is between Morocco, Tunisia, Libya, Niger, Mali, Mauritania, Western Sahara. Algeria’s Relative Location

  4. Algeria • Algeria’s population is about 34,000,000 people. • About 81% of the people speak Arabic.

  5. Ottoman Empire • 1517 – Algeria was made part of the Ottoman Empire by Barbaros Hayreddin Pasa and his brother Aruj. • They established Algeria’s modern boundaries. • Algeria was under the Ottoman Empire until the French colonization.

  6. Algeria • 1830 – France invaded Algeria. • They took over the Ottoman Empire. • Algeria was under the rule of France for 132 years.

  7. Algeria’s Independence • 1954 – Algerian War of independence. • There was a poll that resulted in a landslide vote for complete independence. • 1962, July 5 - Algeria became independent from France.

  8. Government • Algeria’s government is Parliamentary Republic • Algeria’s current leader is Abdelaziz Bouteflika who was elected on April 27, 1999

  9. Government Set Up • President – 5 Year Term, Limited to Two Terms • Prime Minister Head of Government Appointed By President • Parliament – Lower Chamber and Upper Chamber • Algeria is a multi-party state.

Algeria’s Religions • Algeria’s people are mostly Sunni – Muslim and very few others are Christian and Jewish. • Muslims are supposed to pray five times a day, dawn, noon, afternoon, sunset, and evening. • Muslim holy day is on Fridays, business are closed and sometimes close on Thursdays. This makes Thursdays and Fridays the weekend.

  12. Algeria’s Currency • People of Algeria use the dinar currency.

Algeria’s Future • Algeria’s economy will improve with oil as one of the main exports by continuously bringing in money for the country. • But, Algeria’s economy may decline with less or no sales of oil in the future if: • the world finds an alternate source of fuel instead of gasoline • Algeria’s natural resource of oil runs dry
