Objectives • Share considerations for assisting disenfranchised learners. • Provide scope and understanding for providing wrap around services. • To determine causes of educational disparities. • Create dialogue regarding best practices and industry standards regarding disenfranchised learners.

DEFINITIONS • Achievement Gap- The disparity in academic performance between groups of students. • Disenfranchised Learner- individuals whose educational advancement was not considered during the original architecture of our current educational system. i.e., students of color, women, non-Christian, ethnic minorities etc., • Minorities- individuals who derive from African, Latina/o or Southeast Asian ancestry. • Opportunity Gap- The disproportionate impact race and ethnicity has on the advancement on people of color.

  6. WHERE ARE WE NOW THE OPPORTUNITY GAP Who: Students of color. What: The systemic and implicit barriers that exist for students within ethnic minorities. How: Limited or no access to LIFE needs. Outcomes: Students of color often have to overcome MORE challenges to have an EQUAL chance at life’s opportunities.

WHY ECOSYSTEMS ARE NECESSARY • To reaffirm the notion that affirmative action is needed to protect opportunities for disenfranchised learners. • To debunk the myths that current practices have closed achievement gaps amongst disenfranchised learners. • To address the socioeconomic Opportunity Gap that exists for students of color.

  10. FOCUS 1: LEARN ABOUT YOUR LEARNER Purpose Identify learner barriers & challenges. Identify learner interests & catalyst. Build a rapport. Remove your experiences. Unlearn, learn and relearn. Payoff Building a system that works. Best match and fit outcomes. Sustainability.

  12. FOCUS 1: LEARN ABOUT YOUR LEARNER TIPS: Utilize value assessments Challenge yourself to learn ONE unique thing about your learner. Communicate with other advocates who engage with the learner. Invite and invest in the learner’s support system(s).

  13. FOCUS 2: OUTLINE AND ALIGN PRIORITIES Purpose Identify learner priorities Triage major issues. Create short term and long term goals. Identify gaps. Vision & goal setting. Payoff Establishing learner buy-in. Creating & enhancing learner values. Promote soft skill creation. Efficiency.

An opportunity devalue learner goals or desired outcomes. • An opportunity to reaffirm learner strengths. • An opportunity for professional and personal development. • An opportunity for true unbiased and genuine diversification of thought, experience and existence.
