  1. Butterfly Life Cycle:Metamorphosis Ms. Harrington Second grade Science lesson #1 10/3/12

  2. Learning Objectives: • The students should understand the butterfly metamorphosis • They should be able to observe and take notes as they watch the metamorphosis • Understand the characteristics of each step and why it happens • Standard 2-1 • Standard 2-2 • Standard 2-4

  3. The Beginning: First, A tiny little egg is laid by a girl butterfly on a leaf or stem of a plant. • What is in this little egg? • A baby Caterpillar

  4. A few days later… The egg stays on the leaf until it is ready to hatch Look! It hatched! Now it is a caterpillar!

  5. Chrysalis • The Chrysalis is the resting stage for the caterpillar. • The caterpillar creates this chrysalis by using silk like string that the caterpillar produces. • The caterpillar wraps itself in this chrysalis for a long period of time, until it is ready to come out. Chrysalis

  6. Final Stage: The caterpillar is no longer a caterpillar, it is now ready to come out of its chrysalis and form into a butterfly.

  8. Fun Facts about Butterflies • Butterflies fly between 5 and 30 miles per hour! • A butterfly can lay up to 500 eggs! • Some butterflies have a wing span of 11 inches! • There are 700 species in North America! • People who study butterflies are called Lepidopterist!
