Burr Hamilton Duel 1804 • The Burr Conspiracy 1806: Essex Junto • Aaron Burr- plot to be governor of New York; General James Wilkinson • Succession of New England- Federalists hub: then take the American Southwest • Burr loses the election do to electioneering of Hamilton (Burr’s sex scandals) • Duel: Weehaken, New Jersey • “At the crucial moment his hand shook and mine never does.” • Invasion of Mexico- Wilkinson turns against Burr- • Burr Treason Trial (acquitted due to lack of evidence… John Marshal limited the evidence allowed • Zebulon Pike Journey 1806-1807

  9. Sally Hemmings • Campaign of 1804- landslide victory for Jefferson • While in France, Sally Hemmings gave birth to illegitimate children • First term overwhelmingly popular… • 2nd… not so much- Embargo Act of 1807

Impressment • Napoleonic War- Britain vs France • Lack of sailors- horrible sailing conditions • British would impress sailors to sail for them- no naturalized citizenship • Embargo Act… prohibits all exports into America- damages the economy of the Northeast • Abolished and replaced with the Nonintercourse Act (bans trade with Britain)
