  2. What do we do?Advancing and supporting good practice in Teaching and Learning in Education ESCalate produces and disseminates resources for staff and students in: HE and HE in FE, for example: • Education Studies, • Continuing Education, • Lifelong Learning, • Initial Teacher Education/ PGCE.

  3. ESCalate structure • HE Academy Network in York: 24 Subject Centres • ESCalate based at GSoE, University of Bristol • Network of academic consultants and associates across the UK • Departmental links and contacts plus ESCalate members and / or registered colleagues - open to all!

ESCalate website – key source of information: • Resources – including teaching support, reports, research findings, academic papers and evaluations • Online membership / registration • E-submission of funding bids • External Examiner online register • Online event registration • Automated book reviews, electronic bulletins and e-newsletters

Recent ESCalate statistics Registered colleagues/ members: 3271 338 active contacts within institutions, with 348 further people offering to be contacts 224 registered External Examiners - with an additional 423 potential External Examiners HoDs: 406 49 registered on the Expertise Exchange Website: receiving 10,000 hits a day

  8. ESCalate - across the world Australia,Cambodia, Canada, Dubai, Ethiopia, Finland, France, Holland, Hong Kong India, Jordan, Kuala Lumpur, Nigeria, Pakistan, Portugal, South Africa, Sultanate of Oman, Sweden, Taiwan, Turkey, United States, West Indies etc.

Changes to grant funding 2009-10 • ESCalate offers awards for development of teaching and learning, pedagogic research, and resources; • Awards offered to those in Education departments in universities and FE Colleges providing HE level programmes; • Awards range from £50 to £15k; • Thematic, lasts one year, based on national and discipline priorities in all four administrations of the UK. These are large awards requiring collaboration across institutions and across countries of UK • Open, several types, with applicants proposing their own focus.

Thematic and open awards Thematic • Student wellbeing (2 x £10k max) • 21st Century teacher educator (2 x £15k max) Open • Hot Topics – (£50) individual award to promote discussion of an important current issue • Sharing Ideas – (£500) for dissemination of good ideas and interesting practice • Student award – (from £200-£1000) for supporting individual or group learning • Pedagogy and practice – (up to £5k) for development activity by individual or group

Everything is on line, including: guidance, FAQs, (EoI) form (Expression of Interest) where required, full proposal form; • Applicants must first register online with ESCalate; • Where bids go to external evaluators, we receive an independent recommendation on whether to make an award; • Themed awards application has two stages, first the EoI, and for successful applicants, a second stage full proposal; • For bids over £1k, milestones, targets and expenditure details are required; • For bids over £1k successful applicants receive a formal offer which needs to be signed by an institutional finance officer; • Payments of larger awards are phased through the life of the project, against completion of agreed outputs with payments made on receipt of an invoice; • For Hot Topics, Sharing Ideas, and Student Awards, the application and payment processes are simplified and kept to a minimum.

Additional ESCalate activity includes: • Leading HEA funded Internationalisation project across all centres with Languages SC • Employability module – online for students and staff • Increasing Subject Centre Collaboration especially re: the Every Child Matters agenda e.g. the ICS-HE project • Work with CETLs and others
