Characteristics of Comedy: • Begins in a state of disorder and moves toward a resolution. • Style, setting, characters, and themes are less exalted and more common than those of a tragedy. • Deals with people in a human state and it is more realistic in what it expects from people. • The comic hero often succeeds because of his wit, ingenuity, and good fortune.

  2. The characters receive better than they deserve, and the audience rejoices with them. • The plot doesn’t necessarily revolve ONLY around nobility and people of higher birth. Common people and/or peasants can be the protagonists.

  3. A Brief Review of Tragedy: • Often begins in a state of order and moves toward dissolution. • Deals with people in their ideal state, including idealistic standards. • The tragic hero fails because of fate or some serious character flaw. • The characters get what they deserve (or worse), and the audience suffers with them.
