  1. Children in the Middle East From Afghanistan to Dubai By: Leigh Rubin

  2. Afghan Child Labour • 30% of Afghan children involved in child labour • UNICEF gives children opportunity to be educated that are involved in child labour • Causes high risk of injury due to heavy objects including bricks • Started because of poverty and socioeconomic inequalities

  3. Struggles of Girls • Smuggle products into country including flour • Work to avoid police while smuggling • Highly discriminated against • Girls working causes boys to have to do more work around the house

  4. Supporting Children • Over 1000 children involved in UNICEF sponsored activities • Over 400 children given free education by UNICEF • 160,000 children given a chance for education (not free) across the middle east

  6. Over 2000 children working in brick-making factories Money used to pay off family debt Mostly located in Eastern Afghanistan Child labour protection provided by UNICEF and CPAN Education provided by both governmental and non-governmental organizations More Child Labour

Life in Debt • Over 550 families in debt living in small mud hutson the outskirts of the factories • pay in order to live there • 40 thousand Afghanis owe at least $800 in U.S. debt • a lot of money for them • By paying off debt causes more debt for families • Families can’t afford essentials for living (clothing, food, shelter) • Need to pay for medical purposes too

  8. More Child Labour • Work 8-12 hours per day • UNCCR (UN Convention of Children’s Rights) and other treaties prohibit child labour • Most of the time the law isn’t followed • Majority of child labourers under the age of 15

  9. Very wealthy so can spend a lot and parents earn a lot Don’t have to pay taxes Live in mansions Get high level education Children in Dubai

  10. International Schooling in Dubai • Large amount of children • A negative reason of going to Dubai • Over GBP 8,000 for tuition for best schools • Laptops, uniforms, supplies, etc. are provided if you pay tuition

  11. Bad Things About Dubai for Children • Summer • Too hot for children to be comfortable • Most polluted area of the U.A.E. • Most children just hang out at friend’s air-conditioned house’s • Many times can take two hours to get to school

  12. Child Marriage • Considered to be a “violation of basic human rights” around the world • Many middle eastern countries have forced marriages • Forced to marry as young as seven years old • Law for marriage = cannot marry until sixteen years old

Religious Effects of Children in the Middle East • Muslims must fight holy war to please Allah each day • Holy war can include: • Terrorism • Bombing • Bringing down planes • Fighting holy war called Jihad (struggle) • Reward: Good Afterlife • Children may become terrorists • Parents may be terrorists • May have to kill friends
