  1. Forestry and Rangelands Hunter Kilborn and Bhakta

  2. Ecological Services • Provide habitats • Carbon Sinks • Affect local climate • Purify air and water • Reduce soil erosion • Provide energy and nutrient cycle

  3. Old-Growth Forests • Old to Middle-aged trees • Minimal human activity • Multi-layer canopy • Fungal ecosystem • Indicator species • Healthy soil

  4. Fires • Help clean the forest of leaf litter • Improve soil health • Surface Fires clear leaf litter, kill seedlings, and undergrowth. • Ground fires are hard to detect. • Crown Fires happen when there hasn’t been fires in a long time. Super hot and destroy the forest.

  5. Deforestation • Selective-cutting- Cutting certain trees in an area. • Strip-cutting- cutting a strip of trees out of a forest. • Clear-cutting- Clearing the forest or a large area of the forest.

  6. Rangelands • Problems: Overgrazing, desertification. • Overgrazing- the over use of rangelands as a source of food for steer and cattle. • Desertification- result of abuse of the land from multiple causes. Results in increased soil erosion and decreased fertility.

  7. Fun Facts • Rangelands are 40% of the United States landmass. • 80% of the western US are rangelands. • Mostly arid to semi-arid climates. • Only 7% of the east coast are rangelands. • Regulated and controlled by the Bureau of Land Management (BLM), and the Forest Service.
