This document outlines the need for an interface selection mechanism to utilize a multihomed mobile router efficiently. It discusses various characteristics of access networks (WCDMA, WiFi, WiMax/WiBro) and provides insights on how a multihomed mobile router can exploit them to enhance traffic forwarding. The text covers topics like traffic control options, test implementation on Fedora Core, and the importance of information carried on the traffic control option for selecting the appropriate access network. This work is aimed at optimizing network utilization and enhancing user experience.

Interface Selection for a Multihomed Mobile Router(draft-park-mis-01.txt) 67th IETF Semun Lee Seoul National University smlee@mmlab.snu.ac.kr Seoul National University
Problem statement • Various characteristics of access networks • WCDMA (3G), WiFi, WiMax/WiBro, … • A multihomed mobile router (MMR) has multiple kinds of wireless interfaces, each of which is attached to different access networks • How to exploit them? Seoul National University
Multiple interface selection • A multihomed mobile router (MMR) selects appropriate access network to forward traffic Seoul National University
Traffic control option • Option type • 001xxxxx • Option value length • 3 • Traffic class • Represents the traffic class to which the packet belongs • Preference • Represents the detailed requirement of the traffic Option type (8bits) Opt. value length (8) Traffic class (8bits) Preference (16bits) Seoul National University
Test Implementation • Fedora core 4 • Kernel version • ARs and MMR: 2.6.15 • Other machines: 2.6.9 • Using ip6tables and libipq library, we captured packets from MN to CN at MMR and select proper egress interface of MMR for that packet • The interface is selected based on pre-defined policy • We tested video streaming from MN to CN Seoul National University
Conclusion • An interface selection mechanism is needed to use the accessibility of a multihomed mobile router efficiently • Information needed to select appropriate access network is carried on the traffic control option in the Hop-by-hop options extension header Seoul National University
