  2. The Context In 2013: • Raising the Age of Participation • Youth Unemployment (16-24) 1.09 Million (approximately 2000 in Bournemouth) In 2050: • Britain will be the biggest economy in Europe (Goldman Sachs)

  3. Challenges • Scale of the problem • Skills gaps • Employer engagement • Fragmented system • Unrealistic expectations

  4. Solutions From British Chamber of Commerce • Talk to us • Drop the jargon • Welcome employers into schools • Stop initiatives • Let businesses control the skills agenda • Invest in careers guidance

Youth unemployment can only be solved locally Ian Brinkley Director of The Work Foundation The 14-19 Team will continue: • Talking with employers • Bridging the employer – school partnerships • Supporting good IAG • Linking relevant stakeholders • Working to increase Apprenticeship opportunities

  6. But we all need to do more and: • Identify those young people in need earlier to prevent them falling through the gaps • Create more bridges into work especially for the hardest to reach • Match training to local jobs • Incentivise employers to take on young people

  7. It’s not what we say but what we do It’s not what we promise but what we deliver None of us is as clever as all of us Together could we create a “NEET free Bournemouth?”
