  2. Simile • Using like or as to compare two things. • Example : I’m as hungry as a bear.

  3. Metaphor • Comparing two things without using like or as; something is something as. • Example: She is a dog when she is hungry.

  4. Hyperbole • Using exaggeration to make a point. • Example: Her brain is the size of a pea.

  5. Onomatopoeia • Sound word • Example: The bird in the tree went chirp-chirp.

  6. Alliteration • Repetition of beginning sounds. • Example: The red eyed rabbit ran right by me.

  7. Personification • Giving human qualities to something that’s not human. • Example: The horse shook hands with me.

  8. Idiom • A well known expression that does not mean what it says. • Example: A taste of his own medicine.

  9. Practice Problems • 1. His head was so big it was about to blow up. • 2. The bunny was as small as a stick. • 3. The girls sandals went click-clack. • 4. Her closet is a disaster. • 5. When I walked passed the giraffe it said hey to me. • 6. The red rooster rooted right by the roost. • 7. A dime a dozen anything that is common and easy to get.
