You are BEGINNING the registration process today, you will continue to look for classes until the semesters begins. • the “snapshot” of your schedule for financial aid will not be taken until a month after the semester begins. • If you see a class that is open , register for it quickly (do not build up a shopping cart, you can always drop it). • Look for movement of waitlisted classes after 4:30 on the following payment deadline dates: August 26

  5. Before we begin… • Pre-Orientation Homework • We will not be covering this material today • It is your responsibility to view the modules and take the quiz • The modules are always available on the Advising website

  6. Requirements review

  7. Language-other-than-English Requirement (LOTER) • How to satisfy the LOTER: • Language at intermediate-level • Third semester /‘201’- level language • AP or CLEP exams • Proficiency exam • Native Speaker designated course • High school language will not clear this requirement unless you passed an AP language exam with a 3 or higher

How to Determine which Language Level to Take: • If it has been more than 2 years since you have taken a language, you will need to start at the 101 level • In a 102-level language course, instruction will be taught strictly in the native language • Must earn a “C” or better • Professors require proof that prerequisites have been met

  9. Language Proficiency Exams • If you are proficient in a language other than English you may test out of the requirement • Contact the Language Learning Center: • Kellogg Library 1107 • www.csusm.edu/llc

NATIVE SPANISHSpeakers • How do you know if you are considered a “Native Spanish Speaker”? • You speak Spanish at home/with relatives • You grew up in a Spanish speaking country • You are able to follow/understand a Spanish speaking conversation • You need practice with Spanish grammar, accents and/or spelling • Take Spanish for Native Speakers: SPAN 250 • One course (SPAN 250) satisfies the LOTER

Upper-Division General Education • BB – Science/Mathematics • CC – Humanities • DD – Social Science • Must be completed at CSUSM for a letter grade • To be taken at Junior standing (60 units) • May not be double-counted in primary major (unless noted) • Must be in a different discipline than your major(example: no PSYC classes for PSYC majors)

Academic requirement Report (ARR) • Tracks the completion of ALL degree requirements • Lists all courses completed, in-progress, transfer courses, test credit • Check your ARR frequently to ensure your general education, university and major requirements are satisfied • The ARR is what the University will use to graduate you

  21. 1. If you are a PSYC major and want to continue to be a PSYC major, do nothing 2. If you are a HD major, you need to declare your concentration with this form 3. If you are PSYC major and want to change to HD or other major complete this form

  28. PREREQUISITES • Be aware that many upper-division courses required for the majors have prerequisites • It is your responsibility to know about prerequisites • Prerequisites are listed in the General Catalog • Take prerequisites EARLY! • Plan your schedule accordingly

  29. Avoid Walk-Away F’s • If you are registered for a course and you stop attending or have never attended: • It is your responsibility to officially drop the course! • Your professor WILL NOT drop you • If you do not drop the course you will receive a WU gradeWU=F

  30. FALL 2013 UNIT LIMIT • CSUSM has placed a 17 unit limit on all student registration • However, 17 units is considered a very heavy workload • We recommend that you take a maximum of 15 units

  32. Articulated Classes from local community colleges Psychology Depart does not accept “Elementary Statistics” courses To fulfill PSYC 220. Only Exception is Math 140 at MSJC. Statistics course must be a Behavioral Statistics course.

More Clarification on courses taken at community college • Lower Division courses that come from community college or other 4 year institutions are typically numbered 100 – 299 • Upper Division Courses can only be taken at a 4 year accredited institution/University. They are typically numbered 300 – 499 • Example: Social Psychology taken at Palomar WILL NOT equal PSYC 332 – Social Psychology at CSUSM. Even though it has the same course title. • Upper Division Courses taken at a 4 year university can be petitioned to meet requirement with PSYC or HD Department Faculty (Alternative Course Approval)
