  2. To what extent do the banana industries operating around the world today, particularly in the Central America and the Southern Asia influence the local communities in that area, as well as the international community?

  3. WHY and HOW is this a global issue? Any solutions?

  7. According to Philipino Banana Growers and Exporters Association (PBGEA): Ecuador accounts for 29% of total global exports, Costa Rica exports approximately 13%, the Philippines 12%, Columbia 10% and Guatemala 7%

  11. Negative Impacts Monoculture plantation = soil fertility diminishes = farms must expand Destruction of forests and its ecosystem Deforestation + unhealthy soil = erosion →causes land slides and flooding Water ecosystem can also be affected   →e.g. Cahuita National Park in Costa Rica

Benefits: • Cheap, readily available bananas in developed countries • Market domination by transnational firms • Employment in developing countries • Disadvantages: • Wage and standard of living of local workers • Inhibition of local development •  →misallocation of resources • →dependency of local economy on banana plantation • Potential of poverty and unemployment being created Figure 16.
