Gulliver’s Travels • A novel from 1726 • Written by Jonathan Swift • Swift collected many political experiences over his years, and he translated these experiences into this piece of literature. • This work quickly became popular because of all of the socio-political humor embedded in it. • Ex.) There is a scene in the book where the giant Gulliver has to put out a fire for the Lilliputians by peeing on it, which can be seen as a metaphor for when Swift was a Tory and made an illegal treaty with France.

  3. What is a Tory? • A member of the political party in Great Britain from the late 17th century to about 1832 that favored royal authority over Parliament and the preservation of the existing social or political order. • For God, the King, and the Country • A loyalist

  4. “Le Misanthrope” • A satirical play from 1666 • Written by Moliere • This is a hypocrisy of French aristocratic society, but also points out flaws that all humans have. • Jean-Jacques Rousseau liked it, but did not like the fact that the main character, Alceste, is belittled as a character and idealistic notions about society are disregarded.

  5. “Le Philinte de Moliere” • A satirical play from 1791 • Written by Philippe Francois Nazaire Fabre d’Eglantine • (an enthusiastic revolutionary) • Continuation of Moliere’s “Le Misanthrope,” influenced by Jean-Jacques Rousseau • First performance caused a stir • Author’s life, political background, history of theatre in the late 18th century

  6. “A Scene from the Caucasian War” • A painting • Created by Franz Roubaud • Inspired by the Russian-Circassian war of 1763-1864. • The Caucasian part of the war was only from 1817-1864, however. • This painting brings on emotions of sadness and anger from the “Adyghe” people, indigenous groups from the Caucasus. • War sometimes called the “Circassian genocide”
