Biography • Born February 22, 1968 in Long Beach, California • Died May 25, 1996 in San Francisco, California from a heroin overdose • Had a love of Reggae music after visiting the Caribbean Islands. His father said he was a musical genius for being able to blend the Jamaican rythms with American hardcore rock. • He went to UC Santa Cruz to pursue music but eventually dropped out before graduating. • Then attended California State University and performed in the café. Always in swim shorts and no shirt. • Had a dog named LouDog who was on stage during all his performances, and was even on the cover of one of his bands albulms.
Sublime • Sublime began performing at local parties. Yet cut short due to getting out of control and noise complaints. • A man named Michael Happoldt let them use the studio at his school, which led to their first albulm, “Jah Wont Pay the Bills” • Using the same technique, “40oz. To Freedom” was released and 60,000 copies were sold. • Next was “Robin’ the Hood” which, some say, described Nowell’s worsening horoin addiction. • Finally “40oz. To Freedom” was given to a radio station to add to their set and MCA Records finally picked up the band.
Genre • Sublime is classified as punk-rock, but has a heavy influence of reggae and ska in many of their songs. • The band consisted of only 3 original members, drummer, bass, and guitar/vocals. • The Sublime “family” brought a broad variety of instruments to the music. Such as saxophone, piano, organ, trumpet, and trombone.
