  3. Notable things they have done • Slave • Employed at a printing company • Went to Annapolis Naval Academy and helped them set up scientific experiments • In 1840 he developed a steam engine for a war ship • Sold the engine for his freedom

  4. Notable things(cont.) • Then built an engine large enough to drive the first cutter of a sloop-of-war • He makes all the gasses, and works with them • Was taught how to read and write • Worked with Professor Hopkins • Inventor
