Main Tier (*STU) • Lines: A new line will be started every time a student starts a new T-unit (See Manual Appendix I) • Punctuation: • Every main tier should end with a period(utteranceterminator). • All students’ punctuation marks should be put in to bracket, except for apostrophes (e.g. children’s book). • Example 1 (page 2) • Capitalization: All words need to be written in lower case letters in the main tier, with the exception of “I” and Proper Nouns. • Unintelligible words: If a student’s handwriting is hard to decipher, make a best guess at the word and write [:?] after the word. • Number: Transcribe exactly what the student has written, in either Arabic numeral or word format • End: Each transcription must ends in the marker: @End

T-Unit (ManualAppendix I) • Single Independent Main Clause = 1 T-unit • Two or More Independent Clauses = 2 or more T-units • Coordinate Clause • Correlative Clause • Main Clauses with Subordinating Clause(s) = 1 T-unit • Relative Clause • Complement Clause • Subordinate Clause (also known as ‘‘dependent clause’’) • Adverbial Clause • Additional cases of single T-units • Quotation • Non-Clausal Independent Units • Fragments

  6. Dependent Tier (%cov) Spellings: All words in the main tier should be transcribed in the correct form. In case of misspelled words, we need to correct the spelling in the main tier and code our correction in the dependent tier. First write the symbol $SPE, followed by a colon and student’s original spelling. Example 2. Original Text: Exclusion is hurful but if there are rules you have to follow those rules. CHAT Transcription: *STU: exclusion is hurtful. %cov: $SPE:hurful *STU: but if there are rules you have to follow those rules [.].

  7. Dependent Tier (%cov) Capitalization: In the main tier, words written with capital letters in the original are rewritten in lower case, with the exception of “I” and Proper Nouns. Usually, we DO NOT need to code this change in the dependent tier. However, if capitalization is inappropriately used, please write the symbol $CAP first, followed by the misused capitalization. Example 3. Original Text: For example, Newton is a great Physicist. CHAT TRANSCRIPTION: *STU: for example [,] Newton is a great physicist [.]. %cov: $CAP:Physicist

  8. Dependent Tier (%cov) Contraction: For contractions, write the two independent words in carrot brackets in the main tier. In the dependent tier, first write the code $CTR, followed by the original writing: Example 4. Original Text: People that won’t agree with others. CHAT Transcription: *STU: people that <will not> agree with others [.]. %cov: $CTR:won’t
