Economic Statistics can be defined as an historical record of economic activity which is capable of guiding the understanding of an economic system and at the same time guiding the formation of policy outside that system. Quantitative information on manpower, production, distribution, transport, foreign trade, prices, employment and earnings, investments etc are examples of economic Statistics. Economic Survey in Pre-NISE Era: The first ever Industrial Survey in Nigeria was conducted by the Federal Office of Statistics (FOS) now National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) in 1963, in respect of 1962 activities. It was first started as a pilot scheme following the United Nations Statistical Office (UNSO) appeal to member nations to participate in a world census of Industrial establishments. The survey covered establishments engaging ten (10) or more persons. The next manufacturing survey closely following this was the quarterly establishment surveys of industrial production in 1968. The survey of Distributive Trade and Services started in 1971 as a pilot survey and subsequent surveys were conducted in 1972 and 1973. INTRODUCTION/BACKGROUND CON’T.

  5. The collection of Motor Vehicles statistics started in 1958 with data on the number, type brand, re-registration etc of motor vehicles in the country. The survey of Construction started in 1973 by FOS now NBS in conjunction with Construction Establishments in 1976. The Survey of Mining and Quarrying started as a joint undertaking by FOS now NBS and the then Ministry of Mines and Power. The Ministry of Mines and Power, (Mines division) Undertook the fieldwork while NBS carried out the analysis. INTRODUCTION/BACKGROUND CON’T.

  6. Economic Survey in National Integrated Survey of Establishment (NISE) Era: In NISE era, all surveys are conducted under NBS National Integrated Survey of Establishments (NISE) programme. The planning and execution of these surveys are entirely NBS affairs. The common feature is the FRAME in all the sectors INTRODUCTION/BACKGROUND CON’T.

  8. The role of NBS: The NBS has been mandated to carry out statistical activities in Nigeria in accordance with the Statistical Acts of May 2007. The Act stipulates the NBS roles as: To provide statistics to the government, business community and general public as well a international organisation for use in planning and decision making. The Statistical Programmes of NBS The statistical programmes of National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) has accordingly been woven around three (3) priority areas: Economic Statistics: This is needed for budget and general economic planning and monitoring. Social Statistics: Social data is required for social goals Agricultural Statistics: This is the mainstay of the Nigeria Economy outside oil. INTRODUCTION/BACKGROUND CON’T.

Regularity: Survey of Manufacturing Statistics has been conducted on yearly basis since 2004 in which emphasis is on quarterly data under National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) / Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) and Nigeria Communication Commission (NCC) collaborative survey of Socio-Economic activities in Nigeria using an infrastructure called NISE (National Integrated Survey of Establishment). Other modules in the collaboration are: NISH (National Integrated Survey of Household) and SAS (System of Administrative Statistics). INTRODUCTION/BACKGROUND CON’T.

  11. The overall objective of manufacturing statistics is to: Collect relevant Statistics to facilitate the production of GDP and monitoring economic performance of the country. Produce data to aid economic analysis Produce State, Local Government Finance Statistics Collect current socio-economic Statistics in Nigeria to aid monitoring and evaluation of various government programmes (NEEDS, SEEDS, MDG and 7-Point Agenda of the Federal Government) at national and sub-national levels. Assist in social policy formulation. OBJECTIVES

  12. COVERAGE • Survey covers all the 36 states of Federation including Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja • Target population to be canvassed is - Private Establishments

Production of manufacturing Statistics Involves: Sample Frame The frame for manufacturing was compiled from: Value Added Tax Register from Federal Inland Revenue Cooperate Affairs Commission (CAC) National Bureau of Statistics Frame is updated after conduct of survey Currently, the 2007 frame updating is in process due to the inadequacies of 2004 frame.   22. PERIODICITY OF THE DATA COLLECTION • The periodicity of Data collection is quarterly • Quarterly Data are collected on yearly basis • Data was collected for 2004, 2005, 2006 and 2007 • Data collection for 2008 survey is in progress
