  1. Unit 1: Measurement and Probability Math 3202

  2. 1.2 Probability and Odds • Probability is the mathematical likelihood of something happening. • Eg. There is a 50% chance of getting heads when flipping a coin. • It is also the relation that compares the number of possible successful outcomes to the total number of possible outcomes. • Probability can be expressed as a percent, a decimal, a fraction and in words.

  3. Probability and Odds • Explore Probability on page 20-21

  4. P & O: On the Job 1 (pg 22) • A fisheries officer needs to measure the length of three different kinds of fish: pike, trout, and whitefish. The lake has been stocked with 250 fish. • * 25 fish are pike • * 75 fish are trout • * 100 fish are whitefish • The officer catches the first fish to be measured. What is the probability that the fish is? • A) A pike? B) A trout? C) A whitefish? • D) Any one of these three kinds of fish? • Express as a fraction, decimal, percent and in words.

  5. P & O: On the Job 1 (pg 22) • Your Turn:You are fishing in another lake that has a stocked population of 360 fish. • * 162 fish are whitefish • * 108 fish are trout • What is the probability that one of the fish you catch is • A) Either of these two kinds of fish? • B) A trout?

  6. Probability and Odds • Check Your Understanding Page 24-25

  7. Probability and Odds • Odds are a ratio that compares the number of possible successful outcomes to the number of possible unsuccessful outcomes.Usually expressed as a fraction. • Eg. If 1 in 10 cups of coffee at Tim Horton’s is a winner, your odds of winning are 1:9, this is read as one to nine. This is because for every 1 winner, there are 9 that do not win.

  8. Probability and Odds • Tree Diagrams are a type of organizer for displaying outcomes of an event. Each branch represents a different possible outcome. • Eg. Tossing 2 coins

  9. P & O: On the Job 2 pg 26) For the grand opening of her coffee shop, Maria is having a promotion. Each customer who makes a purchase gets a scratch-and-win card. Half of the cards are winners. Suppose a customer has three scratch-and-win cards. • What is the probability of all three cards being winners. • What are the odds of all three cards being winners.

  10. P & O: On the Job 2 pg 26) Your Turn: • What is the probability of scratching two cards and getting two winners? • What are the odds of scratching two cards and getting two winners?

  11. Probability and Odds • Check Your Understanding • Page 27-28
