  13. Rise of Feudalism: ________________________________________________________

  14. Rise of Feudalism: ________________________________________________________ Kings and Royalty: Do what you’re told! • Highest position • Controlled large amounts of land • Provided fiefs (land) to nobles in exchange for loyalty and service • Ruled by Divine Right (claimed that God gave them their power, not the people)

  15. Rise of Feudalism: ________________________________________________________ Lords and Vassals: • Controlled land granted by the King • Paid taxes and supplied soldiers to the King

  16. Rise of Feudalism: ________________________________________________________ Knights: • Received land from the Lord in exchange for fighting • Lived by a code of honor calledChivalry So, let’s go and kill some stuff, eh?

  17. Rise of Feudalism: ________________________________________________________ Peasants and Serfs: • Lords allowed them to live on their land in exchange for food and services. • Gave most of their crops to the Lord • Could not leave the land without permission The word “serf” comes from the Latin word “servus” - meaning “slave”

  18. Rise of Feudalism: ________________________________________________________ Peasants and Serfs: The word “serf” comes from the Latin word “servus” - meaning “slave” Can you see why?

  19. The whole system of feudalism is basically a trade-off of land for taxes, loyalty, and protection. LORDS PAY TAXES TO THE KING LORDS GIVE MILITARY SUPPORT TO THE KING KING GIVES LORDS LAND SERFS PAY TAXES TO LORD (no rights) LORD LETS SERFS WORK ON HIS LAND

  20. Now, if you’ve played Assassin’s Creed 2, you’ve heard of Monteriggioni… Sì, quella è la mia casa. (Yup, that’smycrib.) But it’s actually a real town in central Italy!

  21. The peasants live outside of the city walls… But if there IS an attack, all of those peasants rush inside the city walls for protection. The Lord lives in the huge house inside the walls. And Knights guard the city walls in case of an attack. And that’s how feudalism works!

  22. Rise of Feudalism: ________________________________________________________ Feudal Contract: Let’s take a look at an ACTUAL feudalcontract! Read the contract and answer the questionsthatfollow… Feudal Contract Lord Atton & Lord Leo “Oh ye thee alas yore ‘ere ever nor ‘oft unto doth sire pritheen’er forsooth in whence thou thus…”

  23. Rise of Feudalism: ________________________________________________________ Diary entry/cartoon creation: Chooseoneof the twoprojectslisted on yoursheet and follow the directionslistedthere! NI! NI! NI! USE YOUR TIME WISELY!

  24. We’re done! ________________________________________________________ Make sure to put your notebooks in the crate and your folders in folders, please! Thank you for all your hard work today!
