  2. Format • Brief review topic of academic vocabulary topic • Break into small groups to discuss how to best teach the pertinent vocabulary of a specific science standard • Discuss whole group

  3. Basically, Marzano stresses dual coding of linguistic and non-linguistic information storage: linguistic and imagery. Teaching children through both means helps children “elaborate” on the knowledge and thus better grasp the concepts associated with vocabulary in multiple modes. Marzano’s Six Steps • Provide a description, explanation or example of the new term. • Ask students to restate in their own words. • Ask students to construct a picture, symbol, or graphic representing the word. • Engage students periodically in activities that help them add to their knowledge about the terms. • Ask students to talk about the terms with each other. • Use games to reinforce understanding.

  10. Groups: Discuss and record on the chart paper how you would introduce and reinforce academic vocabulary related to the following: Pre-K and K: Plant life using read aloud. Grades 1 and 2: Plants using Guided Reading Groups. Grade 3: Plant biology using “game-oriented” activities with or without Smartboard. Grades 4 and 5: Plant biology using charting and graphic organizers.
