Exploring Density: A Colorful Water Experiment

In this hands-on science experiment, students will explore the concept of density by mixing water with salt and food coloring. Begin by adding equal amounts of water to two cups, then dissolve salt in one cup and add food coloring. Pour a portion of the colored water into the clear cup and observe the interaction. Through this activity, students will learn about the behaviors of different densities, investigate the results of their mixing, and understand the significance of material density in geological contexts, such as Earth's layers.

  1. Denser Materials Procedures • Add equal amounts of water (1/4full) to 2 cups. • Add the salt to one cup and stir until dissolved. • Add 10 drops of food coloring to the same cup with the salt. • Gently pour about 1/3 of the colored water into the clear water cup. Journal • What did you observe when the two types of water were mixed? • What does this activity tell you about materials of different densities? • Why are density of materials important to understanding the layers of the Earth?
