During a certain baseball season Babe Ruth had a higher batting average than Lou Gehrig for the first half of the season – and again the Babe fared better at the plate than Lou in the second half of the season. However, Lou Gehrig had a better batting average than Babe Ruth for the entire season. How come? Bellringer #58

  2. Solution #58 • Here is an example of how this seemingly impossibility is possible. Ruth batted .300 for 200 times at bat the first half of the season(60 hits) and .400 for 100 times at bat during the second half of the season(40 hits) – a total of 100 hits for 300 times at bat so his average was .333 • Gehrig batted .290(less than Ruth’s .300) for 100 times at bat the first half of the season(29 hits) and .390(less than Ruth’s .400) for 200 times at bat during the second half of the season(78 hits) – a total of 107 hits for 300 times at bat.
