Mountain Gorillas

  3. Important Information • PHYSiCAL CHARACTERiSTiCS: The mountain gorilla has a robust build with long, muscular arms, a massive chest, and broad hands and feet. It is the hairiest race of gorillas; its long, thick black hair insulates it from the cold of living at high elevations. • HABiTATS: Bwindi Impenetrable National Park in Uganda and Mgahinga Gorilla National Park (Uganda), Volcanoes National Park (Rwanda) and Virunga National Park (Democratic Republic of Congo). • DiET: Mountain gorillas eat over 200 different species of plants. They rarely need to drink since their diet is so rich in succulent herbs, from which they get their water.

Predators and Threats • The primary threat to mountain gorillas comes from forest clearance and degradation, as the region's growing human population struggles to eke out a living. • Poachers’ traps used to capture other animals trapped the mountain gorillas instead. When the mountain gorilla pulls on the trap, the gorilla would get wounded and might even get killed. • Hunters illegally hunt the mountain gorillas for their fur. • Soldiers hunt them for food and then throw their bones in the rivers
